Barbados
Angela Applewhaite assumed the position of secretary attaché on Oct. 15. Applewhaite joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Barbados in 1971 and previously served at the Barbados Mission in Trinidad and Tobago from 1989 to 1992. She replaces Betty Callender, who after 10 years departed the post on Oct. 11.
Cmdr. David Dowridge assumed the position of defense attaché on Oct. 11. He joined the Defense Force in 1979 and previously held several senior command and staff appointments. Dowridge replaces Col. Alvin Quintyne, who departed the post on Oct. 8.
Rose Greaves departed the post of accountant attaché on July 31.
Felicia R. Hackett assumed the position of administration attaché on Aug. 1. Hackett, who joined the Foreign Service in 1997, previously served in the Barbados Mission to the United Nations (1990-97) and in the Barbados Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela (1997-2002).
Cape Verde
Margarete Lima assumed the position of second secretary on Sept. 4.
Chile
Roberto Alonso-Budge assumed the position of minister counselor, deputy chief of mission on Sept. 5. He replaces Daniel Carvallo, who departed the post on Sept. 1.
Gabon
Albert Nguia assumed the position of first counselor of finance and consular matters on Oct. 17. Nguia previously served in the Gabonese Embassies in Italy and Canada. He replaces Georges Tigalekou, who departed the post in September 2001.
Greece
George V. Savvaides became ambassador of Greece to the United S
tates on July 30. Ambassador Savvaides previously served as secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Greece from 2000 to 2002, and as the permanent representative of Greece to NATO from 1996 to 2000. He first joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1972 as an attaché. Ambassador Savvaides received a law degree from Harvard University in 1978 and has undergraduate degrees in law and political and economic sciences from the University of Athens. Ambassador Savvaides speaks Greek, English and French and is married with one daughter.
Kyrgyzstan
Emil Kaikiev assumed the position of consul on Sept. 12. He previously served as counselor at the International Treaties Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kyrgyzstan. Kaikiev replaces Morat Asankulov, who departed the post on July 12.
Malaysia
Kennedy Jawan assumed the position of counselor on Oct. 28. Jawan previously served as principal assistant secretary for the South Asian division of the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Shazelina Zainul Abidin departed the post of political and information second secretary on Oct. 25. Abidin has returned to the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mauritius
Eddy Merle departed the post of administrative attaché in June 2002.
Pakistan
Ashraf Jehangir Qazi became ambassador of Pakistan to the United States on Sept. 25. Ambassador Qazi previously served as high commissioner of Pakistan to India from 1997 to 2002, and as ambassador to China (1994-97), Russia (1991-94), East Germany (1990-91), and Syria (1986-88). Ambassador Qazi has also held various posts at the Pakistani Missions in London, Tripoli, Cairo, Tokyo and Copenhagen. He first joined the Pakistani Foreign Service in 1965, and he holds a masters degree in economics. Ambassador Qazi is married with two daughters.
Turkey
Begum Atay assumed the position of attaché in October. Atay replaces Yasemin Guven, who departed the post in August.
Mehmet Demirel assumed the position of attaché in August. Demirel replaces Orhan Gumussoy.
Vietnam
Bach Ngoc Chien assumed the position of press attaché on Oct. 7.
Nguyen T.T. Thong departed the post of second secretary on Nov. 24. |
